Trump Envoys Scrap Scheduled Meeting with Zelensky

(MENAFN) US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, abruptly scrapped a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in Europe and returned to American soil, multiple media outlets reported.

Zelensky had publicly anticipated receiving feedback from the US delegation following their critical negotiations in Moscow regarding a potential peace framework for Ukraine.

A journalist initially reported Tuesday through sources that "Zelensky is slated to meet in Brussels tonight" with the American officials. However, within hours he disclosed a dramatic reversal, stating "the Brussels meeting is called off" and "Zelensky is returning home," offering no explanation for the sudden change.

Aviation tracking data indicated Witkoff's aircraft bypassed any European Union stops after departing Russia, heading straight back to the United States, media reported, citing a European air-traffic source.

Axios had previously reported that Witkoff was scheduled to debrief Zelensky on the discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian leader indicated he awaited signals from Witkoff and Kushner, hinting that positive Kremlin talks could lead to an imminent meeting with Trump. The US president has consistently declined meetings with both Zelensky and Putin until a peace agreement nears completion.

The meeting cancellation coincided with remarks from Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, who revealed the American delegation had assured Moscow they would return directly to Washington following the Kremlin discussions rather than proceed to Kiev.

Ushakov's statement followed a five-hour Russia-US diplomatic session at the Kremlin. He characterized the negotiations as "useful, constructive and meaningful," while acknowledging that "a compromise hasn't been found" and "there's still a lot of work to be done."

The negotiations centered on a US-backed peace proposal, originally connected to a 28-point draft document leaked last month. The plan allegedly demands Kiev surrender territory in Russia's Donbass regions currently under its authority, renounce its NATO membership aspirations, and cap its military strength—conditions Kiev views as unacceptable.
