Israeli Forces Fire at Foreign Diplomats

(MENAFN) Israeli troops discharged their weapons in an apparent attempt to scare a visiting foreign diplomatic mission as it reached the entrance of the Jenin refugee camp, situated in the occupied West Bank, according to a statement made to a news agency by a Palestinian official on Wednesday.

This act, which violated established diplomatic protocols, took place as a delegation comprising 35 ambassadors, consuls, and international envoys approached the camp.

The camp has remained encircled by Israeli forces since January 21.

Ahmed al-Deek, who serves as an aide to the Palestinian foreign minister, reported that he was accompanying the delegation at the time of the incident.

Deek explained that the gunfire appeared to be a deliberate attempt to intimidate the delegation and obstruct their access to the camp.

As reported by an official Palestinian news outlet , the diplomatic mission included representatives from countries such as Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the European Union, Portugal, China, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Türkiye, Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Japan, Romania, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Canada, India, Chile, France, and the United Kingdom, in addition to envoys from various other nations.

In response to the confrontation, Deek sharply criticized Israel’s conduct, demanding an immediate halt to the continued aggression directed at Palestinians in both the West Bank and Gaza.

He also urged that Israel face consequences for its actions.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had coordinated this visit to allow international diplomats to observe Israel's ongoing military operations.

It follows a similar diplomatic tour to Tulkarem, located in the northern part of the West Bank, that took place the previous week.
